About Udaipur

Udaipur, the "City of Lakes" and "Venice of the East," was founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II as the capital of the Mewar Kingdom. Nestled in the Aravalli Hills, the city is built around a series of artificial lakes — the most famous being Lake Pichola, on which the stunning Lake Palace (Jag Niwas) appears to float. The City Palace of Udaipur is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan, overlooking Lake Pichola. Udaipur is Rajasthan's most popular tourist destination and has become a major destination wedding venue. The city is also home to Rajsamand marble mines and a growing zinc smelting industry operated by Hindustan Zinc (Vedanta).
