Shillong, Meghalaya

Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, is known as the "Scotland of the East" for its rolling hills, pleasant climate, and British-era architecture. Perched at 1,496 metres, the city is surrounded by pine-clad hills, waterfalls, and pristine lakes. Shillong was the capital of united Assam during British rule and retains a distinctive colonial charm. The city is famous for its music culture — it is often called the "Rock Capital of India" with a thriving live music scene. Ward's Lake, Shillong Peak (the highest point in Meghalaya at 1,965 m), and the nearby Cherrapunji (one of the wettest places on Earth) are major attractions. The Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo tribal cultures give the city a unique cultural identity.
