About Patna

Patna, the capital of Bihar, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Founded as Pataliputra in 490 BCE, it served as the capital of the Maurya Empire under Chandragupta and Ashoka, and the Gupta Empire — periods considered India's Golden Age. The ancient university of Nalanda (90 km away) was one of the first residential universities in the world. Modern Patna stretches 35 km along the southern bank of the Ganges River. The city is known for the Golghar (a massive British-era granary), Patna Sahib Gurudwara (birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh), and the Patna Museum housing the world's longest fossilized tree. Bihar's famous Makhana (fox nuts) and Litti Chokha originate from this region.
